TMD – Neuromuscular Dentistry for TMD relief

What Is TMD?

Our teeth, joints, muscles, and nerves all work together in the proper alignment and function of our jaw. When any part of this delicate equation is overlooked, TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) and other serious dental problems can develop. Often times there is a connection between Sleep disorder breathing and TMJ disorders.

Getting to the “why” there is TMD problem is key in the long term stability of the chewing system. This system involves the TMJ, muscles, teeth, nerves and tendons responsible for attaching the muscles to the lower jaw called the mandible. If the airway is compromised and the sympathetic nervous system is constantly being activated at night when struggling to breath. This puts a huge strain on the TMJ, the muscles and when activity increases it can cause a myriad of pain problems and dysfunctions. The TMJ when in its proper position should not grind, pop, click or dislocate. Often times the disc has been damaged and is not in the proper position due to grinding, clenching and other activities which cause the disc to dislocate each time you chew. This dislocation often is not painful but is a precursor to other potential major issues. Caught early enough and treated appropriately the damage can be lessened and prevented from progressing to the more painful and chronic conditions.

The Inclusive Approach Of Neuromuscular Dentistry Helps Treat TMD

Neuromuscular dentistry differs from traditional dentistry in that it includes focused consideration of the muscles and nerves in and around the jaw — and the correct positioning of the jaw — as part of overall oral health. This inclusive approach can help treat TMD as well as provide more comfortable and longer-lasting solutions to related dental treatments, such as dentures and smile makeovers.

Hard and soft tissues have a complex relationship. We work to make that relationship harmonious. If your jaw is misaligned, many physiological problems can result, including:

  • Headaches/migraines
  • Facial pain
  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Sensitive and sore teeth
  • Jaw pain
  • Limited jaw movement
  • Worn or cracked teeth
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw joints

We Care About Your Overall Oral Health

TMD affects millions of people. Dr. Ryan Roberson has received special training to address TMD problems using many different approaches to address your individual circumstances. Sometimes the disc is the problem, other times it is the muscles. Each treatment when appropriately utilized can determine the proper positioning of the jaw, and to place the jaw into its optimal position, which can help relieve the symptoms associated with TMD.

If you have symptoms like those listed above, take a minute and make an appointment with our team here at RR Dentistry and Dr. Ryan Roberson. We’d be happy to take the time to visit with you about the benefits of neuromuscular dentistry. Call us at (512) 869-5997 or email us.
