In 1977, Dr. Smith graduated from Sharyland High School in Mission, Texas. He received his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. After three years of undergraduate study, Dr. Smith was accepted to The University of Texas Dental School in Houston, Texas, and graduated in 1984.

After graduating, he began his practice in the Pasadena area near Houston, Texas, where he practiced for 13 years before moving to Georgetown, Texas, in 1997.

Dr. Smith was a member of the Corps of Cadets, Ross Volunteers, and a scholastic officer of the wing staff in the Corp Air Force. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Omega and Officers of Christian Fellowship.

In high school, Dr. Smith met his wife, Rachel, and was married in 1981. They have four children and four grandchildren. Dr. Smith enjoys dove and white wing hunting, saltwater fishing, deer hunting, camping, racquetball, and spending time with his family.
